Steve Jobs Can Suck It

If the old argument, said so smugly by so  many hipsters, that “macs just work” is true, then how come mine does so many random and illogical things?  We record our podcast in GarageBand, which does work nice and simply.  But at the end of every recording, when I go to exprt the file to MP3 for Jer to use in the production, the Mac runs through the whole mixdown process, then produces… nothing.  The file it says it’s generating just does not exist.  No message pops up telling me there was an error.  No indication is given that anything happened whatsoever.  I guess if you’re some latte drinking San Fransican you’d just rather not know about it when your computer fucks up.

And lately I’ve been having some serious Final Cut Pro trouble.  Of the “drop a file on the sequence timeline and the whole program just quits” variety.  Just quits.  Nothing telling me I used an incompatible file (which I didn’t).  Nothing telling me I’m out of memory (which I don’t think I am at least).  Just quits.

Honestly, I am not a Mac guy.  I like some of the programs (Garageband and Final Cut are two good examples), but I wish they would debug them before releasing them.

The DVD Multi-pack

I’ve got alot of movies still floating around the house on VHS tapes. I don’t know why I still keep them, probably just for nostalgic reasons. After all, alot of these movies have been viewed so many times, I’d consider them an old friend. The problem though is that I have no functioning VCR, and really don’t want to buy one since they are averaging about twice the price of a DVD player these days.

So, along I go trying hard to replace my favorites where I can, but accepting in the fact that I’ll problaby have a few I’ll never get on DVD.

I have to say though, I’m loving these double/triple packs they are putting out these days. You know, where they squeeze in a few oldies onto one DVD. I’ve picked up a few of these so far like the Rambo collection, the Willis collection (Jackal, 12 Monkeys, Mercury Rising), the Mad Max collection (Road Warrior and Thuderdome), and even a Clint comedy collection (Every Which Way but Loose, Any Which Way you can, Space Cowboys, Honkytonk man).

Sure, the compilation is usually not ideal (Who the hell wants to watch the Honkytonk man or Mercury Rising?). There are a bunch of Arnold ones out there that are usually just repeats of movies I have already. What’s great about these packs though is not only are you getting a few flicks, but more often than not, they are also jammed into the discount bin. As well, typcially one of the movies on that collection is a hard to find flick to. Sure, the extra features are usually non-existant, but for the most part, alot of the movies I’m looking for from the 80′s and early 90′s don’t have alot of deleted or behind the scenes featuettes anyway.

Now, the main reason for this post. I found this beauty yesterday for a whopping price of $6.

That time, I heard you coming/You lose american asso

Not only does it have two great movies, but both are VHS tapes I haven’t been able to find on DVD yet but I’ve been watching for..  AND did I mention it cost $6? I’ll save doing a review of the movies themselves. Showdown in LT definitely isn’t the best 80′s action flick out there, but it’s really entertaining if not for the just cheese factor, and well Bloodsport..  it’s 80′s martial art film fluff at it’s best. I’ve seen Bloodsport probably close to 20 times in my life, and it’s still as enjoyable as the first time I snick into the theater to see it. After all, back then..  JCVD’s bare ass was enough to give any movie a kid warning.

And to the man who decided to put these two gems together into one beautifully cheap double whammy, thanks bud..

…now, get working on that Dollman/No Escape pack I’ve been bugging you about.

Disgrace

Not so long ago I had planned to visit South Africa this summer for the FIFA World Cup.  OK, it was actuallt 2006, and I was so captivated by that tournament that I swore I would go to the next one.  Of course during the years in between life went on and my enthusiasm for the trip waned a bit.  I realized the expense would be high, and especially now being unemployed it just became one of those things that seemed like a good idea at the time.

Well last night I saw a movie that made me glad I skipped this trip.  Disgrace, starring John Malkovich.  It actually came out in 2008, it seems, but our local indie theatre has it now.  Malkovich plays a Cape Town university professor who has an affair with one of his students.  When he is found out he refuses to conform with the university’s viewson a proper apology and leaves the city in disgrace.  He moves out to a remote farm to stay with his lesbian daughter.  And then the bad shit happens.  They suffer a home invasion at the hands of three black youths, and the daughter is raped.

OK, that’s bad.  Probably doesn’t happen to everyone in South Africa, though.  Probably would be an isolated incident.  Certainly not enough to colour a persons view of the whole country that badly, right?  You’d think.  But the protrayal of the country as a whole is what really does it.  The good neighbourhoods have walls around the houses, with spiked tops and iron gates.  The bad neighbourhoods do too, except they are just in a worse state of repair.  The entire film is blanketed in racial tension, and while some characters seem to legitimately want to make reparations for the past wrongs of society, they seem to be the ones who wind up suffering the most.

In the end it was a pretty good movie.  But I wouldn’t recommend the South African Tourism Council use is in any of their promotional campaigns.

you're next, douche bag

you're next, douche bag

Well, I have finally brought myself to the keyboard to deal with the loss we are all feeling today. Larry from the Edison Twins has left this world.

Corey Haim passed away today at the spry (and drug haggard) age of 38. He was the original Lost Boy, he was Licensed to drive, he was… other movie references to other movies I am sure he made. He did make other movies, right? (FilmDrunk has the Oscar worthy performance from his last movie, for the record… ACTING!!)

This is what scares me at this very moment. Currently various parts of the universe (and by that I mean pointless palaver on the internet) are losing there shit over Farrah Fawcett not making the Oscar Death montage. (not to mention the total lack of Bea Arthur, there by reducing the Academy Awards “spankablity”… wait, what? move on…)

Hollywood. Now is the time to hedge your bets. After the total celebrity death orgy of 2009, I gotta say… 2010 is not looking like your year. So far the next Oscar DeathVideoaramaMontage has “Boner” from Family Ties Growing Pains, an Osmand kid that I think was really colours or something and a dude that played opposite Gary Busey in Silver Bullet… (and I swear to god if you take Clint as predicted in episode 12 I will slay you)

I forgot the point I was trying to make.

Suck it Celebrity Death Watch!

Celebrity Tribute #1:The Mighty Bruce

Who doesn’t love Bruce Campbell? Not many people, that’s for sure! Who loves him..  Smart, intelligent, witty and charismatic people around the world..  just like this guy..  *waves hand*.

As with most people, I was introduced to Bruce from the first Evil Dead movie and quickly watched everything else I could find of his. He’s become a celebrity in his own right, despite never getting that big break out role…  and I wouldn’t want it any other way.

Besides, how many celebrities do you know actually hire themselves out for parties?

Bruce is one of those guys you see in movies, but probably never learned his name. From B-movies, to writing, to commercials, and to television, this renaissance man does it all, with a style that must be acknowledged.

So, to Bruce Campbell, the Thirtynothings officially salute you!

….  and geez man, get onto Evil Dead 4, Bubba Ho-Tep 2, or something else cool. Burn notice is “ok” cuz your on it, but it’s not my bag baby.

Next on Celebrity Tribute.. Bolo Yeung, or Sho Kosugi…?  check back to find out!!

The day the movies died…

Now that the upstart Avatar has been royally curb-stomped by that soulless corporate shill of movie, I think that the whole word can agree that  movies as we have known them are dead.  My greatest fear is that because of this public humiliation that some people may never get to experience this low budget indie masterpiece.  There is only one thing that I can seek solace in now…

Shut up woman (who directed “that” movie) and get on my (magical space lizard) horse.  Oh yeah.  That’s better!

UPDATE:

I have just realized that Kathryn Bigelow also directed a couple of true cinematic masterpieces!  She obviously got the nod for THL to make up for the grievous errors the Academy had made by not giving it to her for the Swayze/Reeves masterpiece “Point Break” and the Paxtonstravaganza that was “Near Dark”.  Whew, all is right with the universe again…   Now who needs a celebratory hour of “Get on my Horse”?

And now I am filled with both joy and envy.  After the jump, I give you the trailer for the upcoming disc of awesome other wise known as the FIST OF THE NORTH STAR VIDEO GAME!

It comes out in Japan later this month… and I am franticly trying to find a release date for North America (i.e. the real world).

If you don’t know what Fist of the North Star is, I hate you, and I will help you:

After a nuclear holocaust tears the world apart, mankind is forced to the harshness of not only the oppression of others who are much more powerful, but the dead earth which seems to be getting worse with every passing moment. But a savior has risen from the ashes, a man who will defeat those who would torment the weak and make the world a livable place once more. A man named Kenshiro….. [via IMDB]

Doesn’t that sound like fun? Like I said earlier, trailer after the jump.

Recognition at last!

The past couple of days have been sorta slow in the  world of pop culture. I was starting to worry, was I really  going to have to sustain myself on a steady diet of real news?

Then, moments ago via the tweets of others… salvation at last! The western world has finally decided it is time to honor one of the most (if not THÉ most) accomplished actor of our time. Yes, at long last Captain Kirk receives a life time achievement award.

Alright, so its at the “Banff World Television Festival” in Alberta, Canada. An event that showcases only the BEST in television, and by television it seems to be mainly 3rd tier cable… yea… But hey! It’s in Banf, nice sking country…and the did just get a Tim Hortons.

*drums fingers on desk*

Alright, its a slow damn day. But congrats Captain Kirk!
